Some recent work as I prepare a story and characters for my visual development portfolio (and maybe a short animation someday if I have the time!)

Sunset Reflection

Recently I caught a glimpse of a river as I was driving past it. When I saw the way that the sunset was reflecting off of the water, I audibly gasped. It was beautiful! Hopefully I've captured the essence of that here in this warm up sketch.

Recent Work

A landscape illustration

and I drew one of my friends!

Quick update:
I'm writing, illustrating, and designing a children's book of my own. I'm going to send postcards to publishers, but I will print and sell the book through Blurb if nothing happens. My goal is to have it finished in a year.

And I think I'm going to make a 30 second short film to learn Flash and After Affects. Thanks to classes on Skillshare and various online tutorials, I think I can learn it! Yay.

Ellie

I think the main character in my book might be named Ellie. I'm not sure, though.

Here's a mostly-finished sketch of her. There are going to be some changes, but for now she can just have fun being creative and getting messy.

Evening Bikeride

I'm an Intern?

This Summer, I am interning in Graphic Design at my church! Today was the first day I really spent at the offices. I'm so thankful and happy about this opportunity to grow and learn and serve in this way :D Also, they are so graciously providing an iMac with Creative Suite...I'm going to go all in this summer and learn everything I can since I have the opportunity to use these programs. I am a sponge!

Motivation and Motivarti

Hey everyone -- I hope you are all having a marvelous day (or night)! I've had such a fun day today. The church I attend is having a sort of vacation Bible school this week and the theme is SPACE. How cool is that? I stopped by today to help and ended up doing everything but helping, haha! But it was so neat - I got to handle meteorites. And watch a man strap himself in a jetpack and fly around. It was awesome, and got me so jazzed up for the day!

Anyways, the whole point of this post was to mention Motivarti. If you don't know already, Motivarti (not Moriarty, mind you) is a neat program where artists working in the industry or with past experience take on other artists as mentees. I'm going to apply for this fall and I'm stoked :D Lately I've been working on bulking up my portfolio and resume. Looking forward to see what happens--the experience and the chance to ask the questions I have will be priceless. I'm hoping (provided I am accepted) that it will be as useful as the Pixar/VanArts masterclass I attended a few years ago. That class was intense, and, at the time, over my head. But I remember everything and seeing it make sense as the months go by is inspiring.

Here's a vector test...thing I did today. I haven't signed up for Creative Cloud yet so I'm learning how to make vectors in Photoshop CS5, which I already own.

Watercolor Adventures

I've been painting with watercolor a lot recently! Here are some of my newest pieces. Some of these are now available in my Etsy Shop.

"Underwater Artist"
Watercolor, gouache, and acrylic, 7x5 inches

(Any suggestions on what she should be painting? I can't decide!)

Watercolor and gouache, 5x7 inches

Great Gray Owl watercolor sketch

Lily Pond, 5x8 inches

Unfortunately, my scanner is old and difficult to work with, so these are pictures from my camera. The colors and dimensions are warped quite a bit from reality. Eventually I will invest in a better scanner, but for now this will have to do. :)

Spring Style

A sketch of an outfit I wore recently. I love the fashion trends for Spring. Bright colors and floral prints are some of my favorite things, haha :)

Timmy

A drawing a day (hopefully) keeps the art block away! Lately I've been drawing something in Photoshop almost every day. Today I created this guy.

Summer Skies

The clouds today were amazing and they made me think of expansive fields of grass just rippling in the wind, so naturally I had to come home and sketch this!

Summer is Coming

I am getting unreasonably excited for warmer weather now! This means...more mermaid sketches and drawings than I really should be creating. Anyway, here's one from this morning! Took around a half hour or so.

Practice Makes {getting closer to} Perfect

For the rest of February and the entirety of March, I plan to draw something (mostly digital) every day. Usually, they'll be quick, unfinished illustrations, but it's just to readjust to my tablet and Photoshop. Here are some from the last week!

Kittens

Some digital warm-up sketches. For some reason, felines are one of the absolute hardest things for me to draw, so I forced myself to really capture the cat feeling in these poses.

Edges

In figure skating, every move you make relies on the edge of a steel blade. In this pastel piece, every mark was made with the edge of chalk pastel. In this way and in others, this piece is a combination of two things I love: illustration and figure skating.
